On a day to day basis, most of us use some of the skills of counselling as a friend, colleague or family member, and often we appreciate and value the support of others. However, at times, our usual sources of support are too close to the situation, unable to be objective, or sometimes part of the problem. I can help in these difficult or sensitive situations, and will do so in a manner respectful of privacy, individual values and choices.
I can help you identify underlying priorities, resources and issues, as we work toward resolution, acceptance, change and problem solving. My responsibility is to be neutral and objective, establishing a professional working relationship geared toward exploring the nature of the problem and developing responses.
Counselling does not necessarily require change, but can lead to greater understanding and management of situations not currently amenable to change. Increased perspective may simply develop your creativity in living with a challenging circumstance. Counselling helps by facilitating an expansion of awareness of the dimensions of the issues you're concerned with. I will seek to empower you to act on this broader awareness.
We all carry a personal narrative, or story, about our life, which may be limited by assumptions or old beliefs. I will help you to talk about your concerns, and ask questions which are intended to illuminate and open up ways of understanding not previously considered. The process of this conversation is at the heart of counselling, a reframing or broadening of perspective on the issue.
